What sort of a person am I
I have got a secret to tell you, I am a hermaphrodite I can be a boy or a girl which ever I feel like, I can lay eggs bet you cant do that, being this hermaphrodite type of a creature certainly makes life interesting. I live for six years providing I am not eaten squashed or poisoned
I don't have legs I slither, I love dark and damp places to play in
Also I am very greedy especially when it comes to lettuce, those delicious plants take over my sensibility destroy my reason and my logic.
They frequently get me into trouble, especially when I go on my expeditions, those expeditions are the very basis of the tales you are going to follow me on. In the following pages you will also meet my friends but they can introduce themselves for right now I cant be bothered because I must go and visit the new lettuce patch which the human my benefactor as just planted for me. I am also very selfish as you will read in the tales, I don't take my notice of my Mum and dad, and I always think that I know best.
I frequently get bored especially in the stones where I live, for after you have slithered down a view stones and climbed back up and repeated it over and over again what else is there to do in the stones.
Still that enough about me let me introduce you to some of the creatures in my world some of them are my friends and others I hate because they eat me
Now let me tell you about my special friend Sidney, Sidney is always there when I need him, and I seem to need him an awful lot, I wonder why our friendship is so lopsided for he doesn't ever ask me for advise.
So what is so special about him, firstly he always so sensible and seem to know what to do when I get into trouble and I often do.
Secondly when we play sliding which is our favorite game he never seems to mind loosing, as you can gather I am a poor looser.
He never moody like me, I get upset at the little thing, he gave everything in his slither.
Because he takes his house with him wherever he goes he often just lodges in the stones when he feels that either Harry Hedgehog or Linney Thrush is about. Did you know that Linney can stick her beak into him and bash is house to pieces on a stone that clever don't you agree. Harry well with his powerful jaws he can just smash his house to pieces with one bite. So you see he has the same enemies as I do.
His food is the same as mine so sometimes we go on expeditions with me, but he is slower than me and that annoys me. That's is why I often go on my own but as you will read in my tales Sidney and me often gets into trouble together, and it never seems so scary when he is with me. Because I don't have to carry my house around with me I can slither into smaller places than he can. He usually spends the winter hiding on a trunk of an old tree, where I spend it in some dark and damp place away from Jack Frost when he comes to spoil our fun. What I like most about Sidney is that you can talk to him and he listens and listens without interrupting and I can’t do that, if I think I am right I have got to tell the person I am talking to. So when you see a snail in your garden and he a stuck himself to an old branch of a tree and you pull him of and through as far as you can remember it may be my friend Sidney
Anthony Ant
To say that Anthony Ant is a friend is stretching ones definition of friendship a little far, he is always to busy to stop and talk, he always rushing around. The other problem is his family it so big, there are literally thousands of them.
Can you imagine living with a neighbour with thousand of children and adults. Still when I see him I will always say hello, frequently I say hello and it is not him its another member of his family, and as you can imagine it makes look a fool. I have often stopped and asked him to play but he never does, he's too busy.
However he is very useful to tell me when he see Harry Hedgehog about or Linny Thrush and he as told his large family to look out as well so they act as our spies. Another problem is the ant language it is spoken very quickly so its almost impossible for anyone to learn it.
Billy Beetle Grumpy
What can one say about grumpy Billy, I have rarely known him good mood, things are always terrible and very negative. When someone is as negative as Billy it is difficult to become is friend, for a few moments in his company you will be feeling very down and depressed.
I try and try to cheer him up, and so does all the other creatures that live in the stones. The only person who can get through to him is Sidney.
If you say good morning what a lovely day
Grumpy Billy would answer Huh what’s good about it and its terrible and it is certainly not lovely, see what I mean.
I have often tried to figure out what makes him so grumpy, for because of his diet of rotting and decaying things there is always food about without looking for it. If Linny caught me and only eat half of me the other half when it had rotted grumpy Billy would eat it.
If I told you a small bit of what he eats you would be sick
Still I have introduced you to 3 of my friends next time I will introduce to more of them but now is the time you discover a little about my world
So let us go on a journey together into my world but first you have to take my shrinking pill for to journey into my world you have to be very small. If you look at your shoe you have to be much much smaller
In my world I can be either a he or she which ever it decides to be on the day believes it to handsome or beautiful, I know it is confusing because in my world you are either a boy or a girl, for I am a Hermaphrodite, which means he or she can be either, however it will make the tales I am about to tell you interesting.
How do we meet and come and find me, well firstly go to the bottom of your garden and watch and look very carefully at the world beneath your feet and you will see that there is another world, get your dad or mum to show you this wonderful world, and looking carefully you will see me and my friends.
However to get into my world you have to look around you and see your world and look at the world of your toys and then go smaller again, the only difference is that my and my friends are alive.My world is at the underneath stones leaves and branches, it is all around us, and if you stop and relax you will see where your feet is an another world. Where the struggle between life and death is been played out every single day, so it is no difference in watching the news of Television like you do.
If I had a TV to watch what would be the headlines, Hedgehog eats another six slugs on the path, or thrushes eat so many thousands of woodlice and beetles. Another headline could read that one million ants move their nest to another position and turn out beetles and slugs from their homes It is this world that I want to tell you about in my stories I want to take you to and I want you to live these various tales and see how much my world is like yours.
I live from two to six years you live seventy years or more mind you my world is much smaller isn’t it.
So let me now do some comparisons between my world and yours
Firstly let us compare size
What is big to you, houses blocks of flats, trees, telegraph posts and all the buildings we see when we travel to towns and cities. Look how big an airport or school appears to us. You must remember a cabbage leaf is enormous, a journey from one end of the leaf to the other is like you walking a mile or two, if you are not sure what a mile is ask your mum or dad to explain. A big clump of grass is like us you going into a very large building like an airport
Well the path I travels to the lettuce is like you walking twenty miles which is a very long way, and the fence around the garden towers up into the sky.
Secondly let us look at dangers
In our world we are constantly in danger if we don’t obey the rules, look at the dangers in just crossing the road. If we play with fire or electricity we are putting ourselves in danger. Again if we don’t wash our hands we can catch diseases. Yes we are like me surrounded in dangers.
The one difference with my dangers is that I can be eaten by Hedgehogs, Birds, toads frogs and some beetles. But above all there are people like you which kill a lot of my friends by crushing them with your big feet and poisoning us with chemicals you ask your Dad about it. I know you like the sun it’s a big danger to me because it dries me up
You know you like your bedroom and play rooms and where all our toys are kept, my world is totally different to yours I like wet damp and dark places so if you come to play with me you will have to like wet damp places.
What I eat is very similar to what you eat , because I like most fruit and vegetables I will eat meat if you leave some dog or cat food down for me, but rarely do I get the chance to eat it because your dog and cat never leaves me any. Your lucky your parents go to a supermarket to get your food where as I have to go out and find mine, so in life I have to search for my meals.
Like you I come in all sizes however I don’t have any arms and legs so I just slither along on a slime trail I create, that is why when you are in the garden you may see where I have been if you look carefully, and it is likely I have just come back from one of my expeditions. I have some very good eyes and they are perched on the end of two stalks which come out either side of my head.
My main difference with us is that I can be either a boy or a girl whatever I choose, I don’t have babies like you I lays eggs. So you can see what a strange creature I am.
You will have yet to discover whether I make friends because if you cannot speak sluggish which is my language, so I hope you soon learn so that you can read all about my friends and the expeditions that I go on.
